Getting started
Follow these steps to set up and start using Moustellix.
- 1Enable the extensionIn Overview, choose Manage Extensions and enable the Finder extension for the edition you installed in macOS System Settings.
- 2Choose menu scopeIn Preferences → General → Context Menu, enable the global Finder menu, or add authorized folders under File Access.
- 3Select an actionRight-click a file, folder or empty space in Finder, open the Moustellix submenu and choose an action.
You can also use Overview or Toolbox directly. Actions that require files open a picker first. Cancelling the picker does not run the operation.
Finder context menu
The standard edition adds a Moustellix submenu to Finder's native context menu, preserving built-in actions such as Open, Copy and Get Info.
The global menu covers ordinary Finder file locations and mounted volumes. When disabled, the menu is limited to your authorized folders. Availability in Search, Recents, protected locations and some cloud views is controlled by macOS.
Use the Context Menu page to enable, reorder, rename or group actions. Showing a menu does not automatically grant permission to read or write files.
Quick access
Enable the global keyboard shortcut or middle-mouse menu in Preferences → General → Quick Access. The default key combination is:
Click the shortcut field and press a new combination to record it. Escape cancels recording. Choose another combination if a conflict is reported.
The middle-mouse menu opens after you release the button. When Finder is frontmost, the app attempts to read its selection. In other apps, it uses Moustellix's current selection. Check the target at the top of the menu before running an action.
The standard edition includes the Finder extension, keyboard shortcut and middle-mouse menu. Replacing Finder's entire context menu is a separate local enhanced-edition feature.
File access
The standard edition uses App Sandbox. macOS may ask you to select and authorize a file or folder before an operation. Manage authorized folders in Preferences → File Access.
Reading Finder's selection, opening a terminal or running AppleScript may require macOS Automation permission. Manage it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation.
Download cloud files locally and authorize their folder first. If a cloud view has no extension menu, use Toolbox or the quick menu. Full Disk Access does not replace the standard edition's folder authorization.
Backup and sync
Export or import your menus, templates, favorites and scripts in Preferences → Backup & Sync. Importing settings does not grant file access. Authorize folders again on another Mac.
You may select a folder in iCloud Drive or another sync service. Moustellix writes settings to that folder; your chosen service handles synchronization. The app does not change your cloud service's system settings.
Settings may include paths, file bookmarks, script text and imported template contents. Choose the backup location accordingly. After stopping sync, manage any existing cloud copies yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the context menu missing?
Check that both Enable Menu and the Finder extension for the current edition are on. For global scope, enable the global Finder menu; for folder-only scope, check your authorized folders. Reopen the Finder window after changing settings. Some special views are controlled by macOS.
Why are there two Moustellix menus?
The standard and local enhanced Finder extensions may both be enabled. Keep only the extension for the edition you currently use. A Finder extension can run separately even after the main app quits.
Which file templates are included?
Built-in templates include text, Markdown, JSON, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, RTF, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Shell, Swift, YAML, XML and CSV. Import your own valid files as Pages, Numbers, Keynote, WPS or other templates.
Is an encrypted archive a password ZIP?
No. A .mouvault file contains ZIP data encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Decryption produces a regular ZIP. The current encrypted format supports up to 256 MiB of ZIP data. Passwords are not saved and cannot be recovered. Regular ZIP compression has no such limit.
How do I install or update the app?
Current beta builds are distributed to invited testers through TestFlight. Accept the invitation in TestFlight on your Mac to install and receive updates. There is currently no public download link on this site. Contact support for availability.
How do I report an issue?
Include your macOS version, app version and build number, reproduction steps and error message. You may attach a screenshot with private information removed. Do not send passwords, complete private keys or unnecessary personal files.
